Prescribed burn continues in Furner Conservation Park Prescribed burn activity will continue in the Furner Conservation Park in the state’s south east today, Monday, 18 November 2013, weather conditions permitting. The 66-hectare operation which began last week is focusing in the southern area of the park. The closest residential area is Millicent, about 20km south of the park. - Today’s activity is likely to begin about 10am - A significant smoke column will be produced – this is normal for this type of burn - Smoke may be visible within the fire ground for two to three days - Crews will monitor the fire ground until the area is declared safe The activity will be carried out by the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR), on behalf of the South Eastern Fire Co-operative. DEWNR Fire Management Officer, Kay Richardson has reminded residents and visitors to abide by any fire-related instructions. “There will be no major impacts to roads in the area however, there will be a restriction on access to the park,” she said. “It’s important people don’t drive through smoke and flame, and follow all directions from fire crews.” Creating strategically-located, fuel-reduced areas through prescribed burning is essential in helping to reduce the potential spread and impact of bushfires on communities and the environment by providing earlier containment options for firefighters. A list of the week’s planned burns is available on the DEWNR website, at environment.sa.gov.au/firemanagement/Burns_and_bushfires. Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so. Increasing prescribed burns in high-risk areas was listed as a key recommendation of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.
