President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is a Failure in The Making It - TopicsExpress

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is a Failure in The Making It is evident that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been a spectacular failure as a president of Somalia for the past two years, notwithstanding the fact that much goodwill was extended to him by the Somali people, the international community, Somali parliamentarians and key Somali politicians. He has squandered that political capital by aligning himself with destructive ideological groups that have no clue as to the historical trajectory that our region is going through and have no interest in wright-ing the wrongs of the last 25 years of Somali history. He now lies on the bed that he has made for himself ( or made for him) and that is where his fate would be decided...unless, he changes his course. On September 10, 2012, President Hassan was proclaimed as the President of a Somali government that was no longer transitional in nature and which was subsequently recognized as the only governing institution in Somalia, worldwide. But there was a caveat to this arrangement: That the President and his government adhere to the Provisional Constitution of Somalia adopted on August 1, 2012, which document is the basis of the foundation for his governance. And there is where things went awry. The president’s agenda were cut out for him from the outset; a continuation of the peace-making agenda of the Arta regime, followed by the Embagathi and Djibouti process, culminating in the gains made during the peaceful election in Mogadishu that placed him in Villa Somalia This political process did not call for any detours. But the President made several unnecessary and egregious detours. When the President was campaigning during the electoral process in 2012, he and his colleagues came up with the Six-Pillars program, detailing the presidents political platform. When he came to office, the president insisted on following the Six-pillar program even though they were irrelevant to the present realities. Not really bad for a political campaign but when it comes to actual governance, a leader needs to retrench, retreat and think over campaign rhetoric once the leader comes to power. Not President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his colleagues. Starting in September 2012, he insisted on his Six Plillars without looking back to the institutional history he inherited. He did inherit a process, a rather transitional process with built-in mechanisms for reconciliation, peace-making, peace building, gradual democratization processes, leading to a full fledged consolidation of democracy going for a long haul- perhaps even further than 2020............. To be continued...... Lik
