President Obama Concludes Foreign Trip In Saudi Arabia... The US Presidents flying visit – no more than an evening in the Saudi kings palace – is his first since the ousting of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, which drove an initial wedge between Washington and Riyadh. Ever since, relations have tangibly soured on every front, with the US outreach to Iran and ambivalence on Syria particularly irking Saudi leaders who believe arch foe Tehran has been empowered at their expense. So bothered has Riyadh become by what it sees as naive appeasement of Iran, that it now seems ready to project itself regionally without US cover. (From: The Guardian) President Obama has been virtually pissing in the cornflakes of - not only Amerikan Neocons (who long for the days of unbridled American hegemony) - but also, of some of our staunchest allies who feel more comfortable with dictators and despots in power in places like Egypt...so long as theyre THEIR buddies...and customers. Some may call Obama naive. I say hes being pragmatic and realistic in the face of a rapidly changing geopolitical climate...where there are other viable alternatives - rather than merely rushing into war. I think Obama has performed rather admirably on the world stage - thus far - in ushering in a new style of American leadership. We can no longer afford to foot the bill and be the worlds policeman or the go-to military badass - in every dispute. Ol Vladimir (and the MIC crowd in Amerika) may long for those old us or them nuclear stand-off, Cold War days...but I sure dont! It it well PAST time for world bodies - and multi-national allieances (Hi there, U.N., G-7, E.U., N.A.T.O., etc.) to actually STEP-UP and DEAL with regional threats to THEIR security. We can help diplomatically and even in applying socioeconomic pressure - but lets just keep the old U.S. out of further proxy wars and military adventurism, folks! We have way too many problems here at home looming!
