President Park Geun-hye and U.S. President Barack Obama have agreed to further exert efforts toward denuclearizing North Korea. Park and Obama reached the agreement during their bilateral summit held on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Beijing on Tuesday. The two leaders reaffirmed that in order to change North Korea’s actions, it is imperative that the countries concerned with the North’s nuclear ambitions assume a united stance. They also agreed to work closely on various levels to respond to situations regarding the North. For peace and stability in Northeast Asia, the two leaders agreed on the need for close cooperation among South Korea, the U.S. and Japan and shared views on ways to establish peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula. Park highly assessed Obama’s leadership in combating the spread of the Ebola virus, while Obama expressed gratitude for South Korea’s support toward related efforts.
