President Sirleaf Has Lost Control Over Her Leadership -Says Maryland County Representative Chambers By: Samuel B. Diggs/Microscope Newspaper Maryland County Representative Dr. Bhofal Chambers says Liberian Leader President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has lost control over Liberia thereby making things difficult for ordinary Liberians in the Country. Dr. Chambers Liberians are now undergoing hardship because according to him the President of Liberia has failed to take complete control over the Country. The Maryland County Representative disclosed that the Government of Liberia has failed to make use of the Natural Resources. According to him some Countries that have no Natural Resources are doing everything possible to improve the living standard of their citizens. He made specific reference on Costa Rica that has made over 96 percent of its citizens educated but Liberia with all the resources still lacking behind. Representative Chambers blamed the situation on giving power to incompetent people to mange valuable projects that should benefit the common people. Speaking at the formal closing program of the world open parliament week jointly held by IREDD, NAYMOTE and Legispool in Monrovia Dr. Chambers frowned on the idea of including members of the Legislature on the National Task Force to fight the deadly Ebola Virus in Liberia. Dr. Chambers argued the Legislature should be the ones calling on the Task Force for update, check and balance noting that if they are part on the Task Force who will call them for report. He added that the people are now getting in Government to transform themselves into queens and kings leaving the welfare of the citizens undone. In a related development Dr. Chambers has called for more openness in the daily proceeding of the National Legislature. He said that lawmakers were elected and sent to the Capitol Building to debate issues that are in the best interest of the common people. Representative Chambers disclosed that democracy as a political orientation or philosophy has a set standards or values. The Maryland County Representative noted that Liberia as a democratic nation is under the obligation to follow those prescribed standards with some nuances. He added that more openness in the Legislature will give the opportunity to Liberians to know the true workings of their law makers. Dr. Chambers noted that the workings of the Legislature need no secret because according to him if they are working in the interest of the people nothing needs to be done in darkness. The program which was held as the Institute for Research and Democratic Development (IREDD) in Sinkor brought together score of Legislative Reporters, IREDD members, and other civil society organizations. Before the closing program the Institute for Research and Democratic Development (IREDD) petitioned the National Legislature requesting for total openness of the Liberian Legislature. IREDD wants the Liberian Legislature to practice total openness with the World Open Parliament Initiatives. According to IREDD’s petition the 1986 Constitution of Liberia gives all power is to the people, noted that all free Governments are instituted by their authority and for their benefit and they the right to alter and reform the same when their safety and happiness. IREDD said in its petition that article 17 of the 1986 constitution states amongst other things that all persons at all times, in an orderly and peaceable manner, shall have the right to assemble and consult upon the common good, to instruct their Representatives, to petition the Government or other functionaries for redress of grievances.
