Presidential Candidates’ Non-Violence Pact Not Effective, Says Odinkalu 24 Jan 2015 Font Size: a / A Chairman, National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu Kasim Sumaina in Abuja Chairman, National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, has said that the non-violence pact signed recently in Abuja by all the presidential candidates in the 2015 election has little or no effect as signs of possible outbreak of violence are already emanating from the camp of supporters of some political parties. He stated this at a sensitization/enlightenment seminar organized by the Redeem Evangelical Mission in collaboration with the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) aimed at ensuring a successful 2015 general elections in Nigeria. Odinkalu while noting the importance of the ‘peace accord,’ he stressed that in addition, “we need the politicians to end the politics of bitterness and politics of winners takes all. I will like to see both principal (contestants), both President Jonathan and Gen. Buhari, commit to politics of inclusion, politics of saying, ‘Whatever happens, I guarantee or we guarantee the other side will have a stake at the table of exercise of power’.” According to him, there are set mechanisms for post-election problems and I appeal to politicians to eschew violence and not to indulge or support anything that will endanger a Nigerian’s life. “If you are a politician and you are seeking office just to achieve something good for the people, you cannot achieve that if under your watch these same humans are exterminated in election violence. So no politician should encourage, indulge, instigate or support election violence or disrupt the peaceful conduct of the electoral process.” thisdaylive/articles/presidential-candidates-non-violence-pact-not-effective-says-odinkalu/199999/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
