Presidential visit to San Dimas draws protesters SAN DIMAS >> Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of Frank G. Bonelli Park both in favor of and against President Barack Obama’s visit Friday to declare a portion of the San Gabriel Mountains a national monument. After arriving by helicopter at Brackett Field Airport in La Verne, the president headed to the park where he signed a proclamation declaring a portion of the San Gabriel Mountains a national monument, a designation most recently sought by Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena. Demonstrators carrying signs and bullhorns lined Via Verde at the main entrance to Bonelli Park. The majority were opposed to the declaration, though supporters of the plan were also in attendance. Protesters said they worried that the designation would reduce access to the local forest. Many also said they were upset that the national monument was being created via an executive order and not through Congress. Some said they did not want the monument to interfere with ski operations at Mount Baldy.
