Presidents Note from the Bryce Canyon Astronomy Festival We have just finished the four-day Bryce Canyon Astronomy Festival for 2014 and must say it was a great success! The skies on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights were clear with excellent seeing all three nights. On Thursday night, we had clouds until 9:30 PM which cleared allowing for about 80% clear skies until 11:15 PM when the clouds rapidly moved back in. It was determined to break-down the telescopes at 11:30 PM. By 12:30 AM on Friday, the clouds had once again departed but by then most folks had broken down their equipment for the night. Each night, we had more than 30 telescopes on the viewing field and in addition to this on Friday night, Seven SLAS members were at Rainbow Point enjoying the incredibly dark skies and excellent seeing conditions. Most of them viewed until twilight at 5:00 AM. It was estimated that 900 visitors were on the observing field on Friday night with well over 750 visitors on each of the other nights. Sunday brunch included a special presentation by the Keynote speaker “Alex Cherney”. This is my tenth consecutive year to attend this wonderful event and again this year lived up to my expectations. Will I be back next year? ABSOLUTELY! Rodger C. Fry SLAS President
