Press Release from World Super Series Darts. Professional Darts Players to Honour John Alder and Liam Sweeney Liam Sweeney and John Alder were simply jetting off to support their beloved football team in New Zealand, but their devotion to their club cost them their lives. The World Super Series Darts event at Newcastle’s O2 academy on Thursday, 25th September, will now include four very special legs of darts with four very special professional players. Wes Newton, Stephen Bunting and former PDC World Champions Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis will auction off one leg of darts each in front of a packed audience with all proceeds going to the families of the two Geordie supporters who tragically lost their lives on flight MH17. Promoters Danny Cox and Steve Wraith, both lifelong Newcastle United fans announced the gesture with Cox saying, “This is a fantastic opportunity for fans attending to rally behind two of its sons, and to give the families they’ve left behind a little security for the future.” Darts legend Raymond van Barneveld has been affected by the horrific tragedy in Ukraine more than most, as 193 of his fellow Dutch citizens lost their life in the atrocity. “This is a national disaster back home in the Netherlands,” said van Barneveld. “Every Dutch person wants to do something to help the victims of MH17, and I’m in a position where I can make a tiny difference to two of the families affected. This event is for the Newcastle lads John and Liam, but it’s also for everyone who died on that plane.” Adrian Lewis is a two-time PDC World Champion, and he is also keen to make the event a success. “As a darts player, we travel around the world on planes every week, including to the Far East and Australia,” said Lewis. This tragedy could easily have affected me, or any of the other professional players on the tour. We’re all determined to use this event in Newcastle to raise some money for the families of the two local lads involved.” Anyone wanting to bid for the privilege of playing one of the world’s great darts players should contact [email protected] All funds raised from the auctions will go to the families of Liam Sweeney and John Alder as well as families of victims in the Netherlands.
