Pride is Deceitful (Introduction): If I Were A Cat… Arrogance - TopicsExpress

Pride is Deceitful (Introduction): If I Were A Cat… Arrogance oozed from his physical mannerisms like January’s molasses. He never really walked anywhere. He pranced. He was the middle management’s best friend and mowed the big boss’ lawn on the weekends, and rarely done his duties at work for passing the buck...and I had to figure out how to get along with him on a job I worked a number of years ago. Perhaps you have worked with this kind of person. Almost every work-a-day crowd has their own “world’s greatest kiss-up.” For him, life was all about where he lived, what he had, how good he was at something, and who he knew. But that is the way of pride: it tends to sucker one into trusting self, wealth, prominence and “good buddy” politics. I wondered if I was the only one who felt that way about the guy when a co-worker of mine pointed at him and whispered, in slow drawl fashion, one of the most vivid illustrations of pride I have ever heard: “If that dude wuza cat, he would lick himself AAALLLL over.” While the imagery gave me a case of the giggles, notably, this same imagery could be seriously applied to the nation of Edom as Obadiah describes it. This week we will be examining the topic of pride with the Old Testament book of Obadiah as our main text. Obadiah prophesied concerning God’s judgment on Edom’s prideful attitude toward Judah . The principle Edom refused to learn is this: Pride is deceitful. Ob. 3 says, “The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee…” This week, let’s read the whole book of Obadiah (only one chapter long) and determine 4 characteristics of Edom’s pride. As we study, we must ask ourselves, “What would I do if I were a cat?”
