Principles of the Kingdom: Matthew 5v4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” We mourn when we lose a loved one or experience a great lose in life. Mourning is an outward expression of the hearts deepest sorrow. Each person at some point in life has or will experience mourning. Can there really be a blessing in mourning? Mourning can draw our attention to God when we realize the helpless nature of our condition, for “The lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34v18). The truth of the matter is that sometimes it takes our mourning to feel the need for God and to draw closer to Him. Sometimes in life, it takes our mourning to hear what God has to say to us in the daily hassle and bustle of our very busy schedules. It may not just take mourning for Him to get our attention but it may also take mourning for us to get His attention! Sometimes, it takes our mourning for us to sit down and consider and assess our lives critically and re-evaluate our actions if we have actually got it all right. There is indeed a blessing in mourning, for it will not just draw us closer to seek the Lord but also the Lord will draw near to comfort us and to receive us. Sometimes, like King Hezekiah of Judah did, we need to find ourselves in mourning to enable us turn our faces to the wall and truly cry out to God, “Remember, O Lord”!
