Pristine beaches , mystic mountains & evergreen rainforests notwithstanding , the backwaters are the USP of Keralas tourism . Out of the numerous backwater tourism options available throughout the state ( including the day & night stays in the majestic Kettuvalams ) the two experiences that stand out are - 1) The 2 hrs. Village Backwater Cruise at Kollam in country boats through lanes & bylanes of water right through the backyard of some house or kissing the kitchen of some another , getting an intimate view of Keralas village life . 2) The 8 hrs. long boat cruise by motor-launches from Kollam to Allapuzha through National Waterway no. 3 , starting from the Asthamudi Lake & terminating in the Vembanad Lake , crisscrossing a network of several rivers , lakes , canals & backwater stretches , giving a cross-sectional view of Keralas life along the edge of the backwaters .
