Privilege-- many of us have a fake notion of what this is. As a Hispanic woman, from Miami, I live life like I am part of the privileged- and to an extent, I am. And many of us do, we think because our skin is tanned (and every one wants to be tanned-look at Snooki), and we are American because we were born here even though our parents are from else where, as long as we dont look black, we do not identify as people of color. We see it in the Latin American culture where if youre a lighter Dominican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Guatemalan vs. A darker one you can assimilate and fit in better in America - so dont you dare call me person of color. Its no secret... research backs it up. True, I may not be black but I know what it is like to drive outside of Miami just a couple of hours north and be sacred for my life to stop and put gas- not because of my car, or my purse, but because I didnt look like an American - whatever the hell that means. But damn... All this time Id been told to bubble in white- Hispanic on my applications for race and ethnicity, but that doesnt mean shit! So, whether you believe the officer from Ferguson was doing it out of self defense or not, we can NO longer deny that prejudices, racism and profiling exist. And not only in our policemen, but in EVERYONE! It is only when we realize that weve been taught to be prejudice from early on, that we can have a genuine conversation about moving forward... until then, what were really doing is trying really hard to hide that we are biased and hold prejudices. To admit that prejudices exist is to admit that I am flawed, wrong and need to change. But who wants to put in work to change when blinding ourselves from the truth and thinking myself as white seems to work just fine for a white Hispanic girl ... #mytruth #theliesneedtostop #prejudices #theyexist #ownthem #changethem
