Proclamation, Not Speculation Acts 17:16-23 One of the primary differences between the apostle Paul and the learned men he encountered in Athens was the fact that Paul had an absolute, divine message from God to proclaim (v.18). Conversely, the philosophers, Epicureans, Stoicks, and other intellectuals of Pauls day were limited to human guesswork and speculation. They spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing (v.21). These were the wise men and scholars of the day, but they were prime examples of the truth found in Romans 1:22: Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. Consequently, they were idolaters rather than true worshippers. It is not difficult to make the application of this text to the post-modern day in which we live. Most of todays learned men are unbelievers, yet the world bows to their presumed knowledge. In fact, many of the world intellectuals are either atheists or agnostics. In addition, most of those claim to be Christian scholars possess only a form of godliness (2 Tim.3:5), and many of them engage themselves in studies aimed at either tearing the Bible apart or undermining its authority. The flood of modern Bible versions, translations, and paraphrases that add to, take from, or raise questions about the accuracy and reliability of Gods Word is a tragedy. But the Lord promises that the pure Word of God will endure forever (Psa.119:89). Believe it. Trust it. Proclaim it. Live it. No new discoveries or scholarly speculations will ever uncover new truth. The Bible is the Lords perfect and completed revelation to mankind. One day all the world will be held accountable for what is plainly declared therein.
