Proposal note on Sakya conference By REGA S. P.Talukder, a well known freelance writer on the Sakya and Chakmas, once wrote in his research material titled The Sakya Matrix and Chakmas, the Chakmas are the indigenous group of people of Tibeto Burman race, and ancient Buddhist population in the Indian Sub-continent, who are known to be the last remnants of Buddhist sectarian conventions in India. They were under the thickest tree of holocaust deviated from the partition policy, dividing Indian sub-continent into two major groups Hindu and Muslim and leaders soon after getting independence contrived Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT, 98% non Muslim dominated terrain) to exchange for Muslim dominated Ferozpur of Punjab. The CHT was transferred to Pakistan and Ferozpur was in India in 1947 and this time forth Chakmas lost their ancestral home place and mangled on the axis of two majorities. Before this break up the Buddhist ancient community were happy as a sand boy and from that time forth they are in a cleft stick. Mr. Talukder further stated that, The sub-regional area between Arakan and the southern Bengal was known to be Chittagong Hill Tracts now in Bangladesh and the people inhabiting there and known to be Chakmas while reviewing the census of India, one British Scholar has written, in my belief that one of the most meaningful services that the ethnographic survey can do to trace the CHT hill tribe: CHAKMAS. Who are these people? How little the people of the world are aware about them? Allow me to introduce a few typical specimen of them. How life has gone forth in their memories? Their past history is rather a far remote history and no provenance. A copy out passage, the Chakmas, an ancient Buddhist population in the sub-continent by Heinz Bechart quoted, Many events have ever taken them and they try to trace their genetic chronology from the Sakya race in which Gautama Buddha was born. And they might have changed relatively little in their poor mien of backwardness and their spoken language in very dissimilar with Burmese and Arakanese but when written it is almost scripturally similar all excepting a few. The evolutionary of them are still unexplored and become more complex in form with passing of time due to acculturation their mien indicates that they belong to Mongoloid race having Mongolian Fold. They also bear the Mongolian Spot a deeply pigmented patch commonly present in the sacral region which generally disappears soon after birth. There are close resemblances on historical line of Chakmas with Sakya race, genetic continuity exits from father to son in Y Chromosome, biologically and a scientific research project into the origin and relationship of Sakya people was taken up by Dr. Mark G. Thomas of University College of London. In essence it is important to know what are the Sakyas posturing before evolution had taken place. Chakmas maintain matrix of old Buddhist identity Sarvastivadin living traditional mores. Sarvastivadin Buddhist conservative Bhikkhus with tradition of the past and their social culture is basically Buddhist rituals in pali language. It has no script but written in Magadhs language. They mainly belief in self existence with bare necessities of life and belong to Hinayana Buddhism and thrived well in religion pursuit- a great number of Buddhist Bhikkhus are from Chakma community in India. Hyderabad based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology study has found that the Tibeto-Burman populations of Bangladesh carry substantially higher mainland Indian ancestry component than either northeast Indian or Southeast Asian Tibeto-Burman speaking people. The study carried out a detailed genetic analysis of three major tribal populations (Chakma, Marma and Tripura) from Bangladesh, who speak a branch of Tibeto-Burman language and compared them with our large data-set from India and Southeast Asia, In the study, we have carried out a detailed molecular analysis of three major tribal populations living in Chittagong Hilly tract of Bangladesh. These populations are described as true aboriginal tribal populations of Bangladesh. Conclusion: There are a number of communities in India and abroad claim themselves descendent from the race Sakya where Sakyamuni Goutama Buddha was born in. Historians as well as the historical narration of the Chakmas themselves tell that Chakmas are of the Sakyan race. A scientific study (DNA study) was once initiated by the department of Biology of University College London couple of years ago. The project aimed to test claims based on oral histories, that the Sakya people have a common biological origin. The project is now postponed for unknown reasons. But it is felt that a study of its kind is inevitable to evaluate the Gene flow of the Sakya. Hence, a scientific study in line with academic prospect instead of religious aspect would be encouraged. For this purpose, a proposal with an earnest appeal to hold an international conference with direct patronization of the Mahabodhi Society, Bangalore on Sakya race & their where about in Buddha Gaya is placed.
