Protecting your eyes in a pool. I remember the days of swimming in - TopicsExpress

Protecting your eyes in a pool. I remember the days of swimming in the pool all day long, everyday, all summer long. At the end of each day, I felt exhausted. My body felt fatigued and my eyes were red and irritated—all part of the game. For a full day in the pool, the sacrifice was totally worth it. Are those days gone? Do kids still swim without goggles or eye protection in the pool? Do they really keep their eyes tightly closed underwater in an intense game of Marco Polo? Probably not. In a fully chlorinated pool (meaning, not salt-water), swimming all day with no eye protection can cause quite a bit of redness and irritation. In most cases, pools don’t contain enough chlorine to make you sick or cause health problems. Remember though that pools are FULL of gross pollutants, seriously gross—think about it. The list may keep you from jumping in with abandon. Because of these contaminants, chlorine is used to help control the pH balance and sanitize your summer fun. However, it’s still important to take precautions that help reduce your risk of overexposure to chlorine. Here are a few tips for protecting yourself when you go swimming: Do not wear contact lenses in the pool (or lake, ocean, etc.). Doing so exposes your eyes to a host of bacteria and micro-organisms that can lead to serious infections. Wear goggles to help keep chlorine from getting into your eyes. (Did you know you can get these with prescription? Co Pay attention to the odors in the air when you are close to the pool. A very strong. smell of chlorine doesn’t mean that the pool is extra-clean, it means it has too much chlorine. Always take a shower with soap right after swimming in a pool to prevent skin irritation from the chlorine in the pool. Don’t hang out in an indoor pool area more than necessary. There are more chemical vapors in the air. So limit your time in these areas to only swimming, if possible. Swim on. Enjoy the pool. Be Safe.
