Protest of mass in Tibet against Chinese mining Phayul 16 August 2013 phayul/news/article.aspx?id=33874&article=Mass+protest+in+Tibet+against+Chinese+mining&t=1&c=1 Thousands of Tibetans participated in a large demonstration against Chinese mining activities Tuesday to Gedrong Zatoe, in the region of Kham, eastern Tibet. According to Ngawang Tharpa, a Tibetan in exile in Dharamsala (India) that the close contact in the region of Kham, more than 4000 Tibetans protested against Gedrong County of Zatoe mines when hundreds of Chinese miners arrived in their workplace. He said that more than 100 Chinese miners arrived in the canton Aatoe, 200 to Chiza and 150 in the Township of Gedrong Zatoe. Ngawang Tharpa said diamonds are found in the region. Earlier in may 2013, more than 4500 Tibetans gathered against the mining propection in Naglha Zaher in eastern Tibet and Driru or there is a hill rich in precious minerals. In September 2011, China announced its intention to spend 300 billion yuan (US $ 46.89 billion) to invest in 226 projects going on railways, dams construction, mining and to the promotion of tourism in Tibet over the next five years. According to official statistics from China, the Tibetan plateau has the largest chrome and reserves of copper with more than its rich in iron, gold, silver, potassium, petroleum and untapped natural gas reserves. Tibetans have long argued that the major projects from China to Tibet are planned and implemented without consultation, the consent and knowledge of the Tibetans. The Tibetan Government in exile claims that Beijing, "under the guise of the economic and social development, promotes the migration of the Chinese population in Tibet, marginalising Tibetans in the economic, educational, political and social fields.".
