Protests against cuts in development aid bear fruit 11-11-2014 Page Content The joint campaign from more than 30 Danish NGO’s in the Global Focus network backed up by a lot of protests from Danes concerning the government’s plans to make a huge reduction in Danish development aid on 2.5 billion DKK did bear fruit. Monday night the two smaller parties in the Parliament Enhedslisten and SF with which the government is negotiating the national budget for 2015 agreed with the government that the cut in the Danish development aid will be DKK 1 billion. ”We would like to thank everyone that have been part of the joint forces and backed our efforts to avert the government’s planned proposal of huge cuts in the development aid. A big group of Danish NGO’s have together with thousands of Danes supported our point of view that Denmark can perform better among the poorest in the world, than to make such huge cuts in the Danish development aid budget,” stated head of communication in DCA, Mads Klæstrup Kristensen, in a press release for Danish media. He sees the cut of DKK 1 billion in Danish development aid still as a disaster – all though a smaller disaster than everybody might have feared. The Danish government had announced a proposal to cut DKK 2.5 billion in the Danish development aid budget in order to finance an anticipated large influx of refugees in Denmark. In the agreement from Monday evening DKK 1 billion will be cut from the development aid – with the possibility to take DKK 500 million more in 2015 from the development aid - IF necessary depending on the influx of refugees. DanChurchAid will now have to study the political agreement on cuts in the Danish development aid between the government and the two parties in detail. This agreement is a partial agreement and will first apply when - and if - the government and the two parties can agree on the rest of the national budget for 2015. The debate and negotiations in the parliament on the national budget for 2015 will continue the coming weeks.
