Psa 119:71-It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. The natural man can not understand such a statement. He has just shared how those with a wicked heart had maliciously lied about him. Whatever the particulars, he testifies that his afflictions had been good for him and conducive to learning. Hear Matthew Henry-...That it has been the lot of the best saints to be afflicted. The proud and the wicked lived in pomp and pleasure, while David, though he kept close to God and his duty, was still in affliction. Waters of a full cup are wrung out to Gods people, Psa_73:10. That it has been the advantage of Gods people to be afflicted. David could speak experimentally: It was good for me; many a good lesson he had learnt by his afflictions, and many a good duty he had been brought to which otherwise would have been unlearnt and undone... Many of us could also testify to this. Happy, carefree times are our preference, but our greatest times of learning are through difficulties and struggles. Remember the little poem by Robert Browning Hamilton- I walked a mile with Pleasure; She chatted all the way; But left me none the wiser For all she had to say. I walked a mile with Sorrow; And ne’er a word said she; But, oh! The things I learned from her, When Sorrow walked with me.” The wisdom writer states it thus-The rod and reproof give wisdom.... Pro. 29:15. So, it is plain. wisdom and knowledge of God and His Word are learned best through the graduate course of affliction. Are you enrolled? How are your grades? It is because God loves us so much that He disciplines us through our troubles. Look up! He is watching!
