State police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan (he has since been promoted as Selangor police chief with the rank of Senior Deputy Commissioner) said the Ops Selamat 3 programme was part of this committed approach in reducing road accidents during the festive season. “In Perak, we have identified the blackspots or accident hotspots where fatal road accidents frequently happen. “Motorists should take notice of the list and be more alert when they are driving through these stretch of roads during their journey,” he said. SDCP Mohd Shukri was speaking to journalists after launching the state-level Ops Selamat 3 programme together with state executive councillor Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin at the Ipoh Integrated Bus Terminal and Complex Bandar Meru Raya last Saturday. SDCP Mohd Shukri said the hotspots identified were those along the North-South Expressway, federal roads and state roads in Perak. “In the Ops Selamat 3 programme, we will also place canopies with policemen in various locations along the road. “I want to remind the public that the policemen are not placed there to give out summons but as a reminder to the motorists. “For those who are drowsy or tired, the policemen stationed along the road could serve as a wake-up call to take a break,” he said. SDCP Mohd Shukri said the policemen stationed at these canopies would be working round-the-clock to serve the public and motorists could even stop by these locations for a break. “Many accidents occur because of our own negligence so I advise motorists to take note. “Apart from that we have about 6,000 policemen and officers on duty during the Hari Raya celebrations to fight crime, with 1,000 of them from the traffic unit under the Ops Selamat 3 programme. “Only 10% of the police officers and policemen in Perak have been given a holiday while the rest work round-the-clock to give our best service to the public. On the other hand, Zainol Fadzi encouraged the public to show their appreciation to the police and other uniformed bodies who work tirelessly behind-the-scenes in order for everyone to have a safe celebration. “This includes the Road Transport Department, Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Department who sacrifice their holidays to give their best to the public, keeping us safe and comfortable,” he said.
