Pulled down Maps in a Mirror, an anthology of short stories by Orson Scott Card, to re-read the original Enders Game. Had forgotten how sparse a story it is. Tells the story focusing on the moral aspects of it, with the emotional power of the novel and does it all in 25 pages. ...and he was still small and-no, Ender thought, he wasnt young. Nobody was young. Bean has been in battle, and with a whole army depending on him he had come through and won. And even though he was small, Ender could never think of him as young again. Theres a war on, they said, and that was excuse enough for all the hurry ion the world. They said it like a password and flashed a little card at every ticket counter and customs check and guard station. It got them to the head of every line. Mazer smiled. Of course, Ender, youll be taken care of. The government will never forget you. You served us all very well. There are a lot of reasons this story has resonated with me for 30 years.
