Punda’s Gomez Square was named after Moises Frumencio da Costa Gomez in 1967. Mr. Da Costa Gomez was one of the first politicians who fought for autonomy of the Netherlands Antilles. The bronze statue was designed by Carlo Pizi, an Italian artist. It cost $12,000 to make, an amount that was paid for by the people of Curaçao during a national money collection. The statue was disclosed on February 11, 1973. Visit ‘La Boutique del Caribe’ at Landhuis Bloemhof to learn more interesting facts about Punda’s history.
