**** Push for greater stake in industry **** PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill says he does not want to control the media as speculated but wants to see Papua New Guinea have greater shares in this industry. “We are following the same legislation as that in Australia and the United States,” he told reporters yesterday. “Are the media freedoms being affected by this legislation? “I don’t think so. This is about ownership, national interest, security of what you write and what you say. “We are consulting the stakeholders, including the media owners. “We’ll be happy to discuss any suggestions that they have.” O’Neill said: “Some of these media organisations are beyond the reach of many Papua New Guinea citizens. “We have to be realistic. “We say this very clearly: We are not trying to control. “I’m sure all of you know Rupert Murdoch has had to change his citizenship to qualify for some of the regulations in the US. “It’s not something that’s out of the blue and unexpected. “I think people need to realise that these are the sort of things countries are doing all over the world. “Only in Papua New Guinea we allow everybody else to own everything but Papua New Guineans own nothing.
