Q - Bukod po sa spiritual anointing, ano pa ang kailangan para maging effective na bible-based teacher/preacher? A - EDUCATION. Lots of it. Tons of it. Because the ideas in and teachings of the Bible are ancient, very particular to one race/nation (The Jews) , with given religious, historical, political, social,legal, and even psychological contexts and literary styles. Dapat alam at nauunawaan ang mga backgrounds at contexts na ito para maunawa ang original meaning of the verses to the original writers and recipients. Sinulat naman yun originally para sa kanila. The OT writers had no consciousness that we, todays non-Jewish readers, exist. Nakikibasa lang tayo at nakiki-apply. One needs intellectual skills to interpret and apply those teachings in the context of present-day readers/believers who live in very different religious, historical, political, social, legal and psychological backgrounds ---and whose realities were not in the consiousness or agenda of the original writers. Siempre, the application of the teachings should be user-friendly, as Jesus would have it. He said Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. The same principle should be applied in teaching/preaching. Hindi lang yung kalagayan ng mga Jews noong malayong panahon sa malayong lugar sa unique history nila ang factors. Mahalaga rin ang kalagayan at context ng reader/hearer/recipient na ang buhay ay maapektuhan ng pagbabasa at pagsunod nila sa mga utos na hindi naman sa kanila ibinigay originally at mga katuruang hindi naman sa contexts nila itinuro originally. Without responsible and informed scholarship, faulty reading ---especially indiscriminate literal reading, interpretation and application of such ancient literature full of poetry and symbolism ---could be off, irerelevant, unkind, oppressive and even cruel. With informed and progressive scholarship, reading and following the essence/spirit of the teachings could be very rewarding, liberating and uplifting.
