Q : Hi i have an eaves dropping issue mostly when it comes to social media, and i dont know how to stop i feel the need to know everything, and i feel like ive gotten addicted, i cant stop and i hate it i dont use the information for evil purposes or talk about it to ppl, but i just like knowing and im really so sick of this habit /: any advice? A: As’salaamu Alaikum, Alhumdulillah, you’ve taken the first step — realizing your habit! :) Insha’Allah you’ll be able to overcome this. It’s great that you don’t use the information for evil purposes and that you want to completely stop, insha’Allah. :) From what I can advise, here are some tips that may help, insha’Allah: Remind yourself eavesdropping is disliked by Allah (SWT): As per The Noble Qur’an: O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful. — Surah Al-Hujurat [49:12] The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever eavesdrops on people’s conversations when they do not like that or they try to move away from him, will have molten lead poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection.” — Bukhaari Try distancing yourself from the conversation. For example, if you hear two people talking, try moving away from that area so you’re not tempted to eavesdrop. Occupy yourself with something else. When you’re tempted to eavesdrop, try busying yourself with something else (i.e. try starting a conversation with someone else, etc). I hope that helps insha’Allah! May Allah (SWT) bless you and your family, Ameen! :)
