Q from Joe Fratena Hello coach Jenny, so Ive taken the plunge and registered for my first full marathon. Ive done 3 halves with the last one in August. The marathon is the last week of April. The question: when do i start training and what should i do in the meantime to train myself for training - Thanks! A from Coach Jenny: Hi Joe! Thats awesome news. It depends on the training plan you intend to follow. My marathon plans (see blink) are 20 weeks long, so with that time frame, you are looking at starting the plan next month. In the meantime, it is useful to: -Alternate endurance runs (6 miles one weekend and 7-8 the next or run 7-8 every three week.) -Run easy effort runs during the week for 45-60 minutes. -Sprinkle in some fartlek workouts where you are mixing is some fast paced running within an easy run once or twice per week. -Cross-train at a moderate to hard effort to maintain fitness and give your body a break. -And strength train to build a solid base of strength before you begin the marathon training season.
