Queen Marie of Romania, queen consort to Ferdinand I of Romania and granddaughter to Queen Victoria and Tsar Alexander II. She was regarded as a great beauty and counted Winston Churchill and her cousin, the future George V, among her many admirers. Queen Marie strove to become Romanias first modern queen by personal involvement with her citizens and showing genuine interest for their welfare. During World War I she volunteered as a nurse for the Red Cross and worked in the wards caring for the wounded soldiers. After the war Marie represented Romania at Versailles, where she won back territory that had been taken in the war, and prompted a French diplomat to remark,There is only one man in Romania, and that is the queen. -Lady Georgiana
