Question for the group: Do folks feel that the profession - TopicsExpress

Question for the group: Do folks feel that the profession comes with an obligation to do/be good? I pretty regularly see posts alluding to our social responsibilities as librarians. Holding ourselves to a higher standard. Address negativity with positivity. There are a lot of us that feel that with our degrees comes a responsibility to social justice and a moral/ethical high road. Sometimes, I see these posts, and I think of Charles Barkley. I respect the folks that feel that with librarianship comes a great responsibility, and I often wonder if they mean that for all members of our profession? Public Services folks? I personally dont agree with social responsibilities as related to my work. Theyre not what I signed on for. My responsibilities as a librarian are laid out in my employment contract, and they dont include a higher standard or calling as a human being. I do try as a human being to generally not be horrible. Im more successful at that on some days than I am on others. But I dont feel obligated to do it...it just happens that way sometimes. How do others feel about this? And yes, I realize Im advocating an unpopular viewpoint on this -- feel free to reach out via PM if you dont want do discuss this in the open, but Im fine with commentary in this thread as well.
