If you want to be great you become a servant. But, if you want to be chief you become a slave. In other words, how high up you will go is determined by how low down you are willing to start. And then Jesus enforced it with his own example in the next verse, verse 28. . . . just as the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. I suppose that is undoubtedly a pattern for everyone who calls himself a minister. We are here not to be served but to serve. Then in John 13 Jesus at the last supper gave that dramatic example of doing the most menial task which everybody else refused to do. He took a towel, a basin, and went around and washed the feet of his disciples. How many of you have washed people’s feet? Well, a significant number. I think you’ll agree it’s difficult to be haughty while you’re washing somebody’s feet.
