RANDOM CP STORY #2, c. 1986: 10.19.14 --Spent most of a day in 1986 on Alcatraz Island to write a feature story on reporter Geraldo Rivera, who was filming background material for his first independently produced investigative special, Opening Al Capones Vaults. Capone lived the last few years of his life on the Rock, working in the laundry room. Rivera had just resigned from ABCs 20/20 magazine program. The idea was to open the famed criminals personal storage vault in the basement of a Chicago building on live national television and see if anything of value (perhaps jewels, cash, photos, gold bars, whatever) was in it, 39 years after his death. It was quite a risk for Rivera to do something like this in his first show on his own. Well, millions of viewers tuned in out of curiosity, of course, and ... well, it was a dud. Nothing but broken glass, dirt, some paper and other junk. Although he warned viewers numerous times that this might happen, Rivera’s career was damaged forever from that embarrassment.
