The Natural History of Uganda Uganda is uniquely positioned and sits on the equator and has the biggest part of Lake Victoria, the largest inland lake in Africa. Uganda is the source of the longest River (NILE) in the world. Often called “the pearl of Africa”, the country is rich with culture as well as being filled with a wide variety of plants and animals. The country is marked by biodiversity and its people are no exception. Her identity is composed of many independent tribes of over 30 million people with more than 50 spoken languages with English, Luganda, and Swahili being the main spoken languages. The country is almost the same size as Britain or the American state of Oregon. Much of her biodiversity is concentrated in protected areas (Forests and National Parks). Margherita peak of the Rwenzori mountain range is the highest point in the country and referred to as the “Mountains of the Moon” where the interesting phenomenon of snow on the equator is found and it has become a land mark of physical splendor. ITINERARIES GENERAL ITINERARY Safari Code Duration Activities During the Safari ES 01 One Day Arrival, Airport Transfer and A Quick Introduction to Uganda’s Wildlife at the Uganda Wildlife Educational Centre (UWEC) near Entebbe International Airport and Mabira forest for forest nature walk. Followed by allocating the clients to the preferred booked hotel for the day. ES 02 One Day Guided Day/ Night Nature Walk or Mountain/ Forest Biking in Mabira Forest and Site seeing at the source of the World’s longest river the Nile and Bujagali Falls ES 03 One Day White Water Rafting / Bungee Jumping on River Nile. ES 04 One Day Horse Riding / Quad Biking along the Banks of Nile River ES 05 One Day Guided Nature Walk in Mpanga Forest. With a stopover at Mpambire village to see the local technology of drum-making. ES 06 Two Days Nature Walks, Game Driving, Launch Cruising, Quad Biking in Lake Mburo National Park. The park boasts of 68 mammal species including the zebras – Enjoy them trafficking for water at the Lake, and 315 bird species. ES 07 Two Days Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Here a visitor should expect to see a half of the world’s surviving Mountain Gorillas in a thick forest, in addition to the 120 mammal species. Its 350 bird species include seven which are IUCN red data listed and 90% of all Albertine Rift Endemics. ES 08 Two Days Alternative Gorilla Tracking can be done in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The Park is part of the famous Virunga Conservation Area which covers Uganda, Democratic of Congo and Rwanda. 38 animal species can be seen, and for bird-watchers, you will enjoy a trip to Mgahinga as your list will shoot around 79 species. ES 09 Three Days Game viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park is fantastic. Combined with Kyambura Gorge, Ishasha Wilderness and Kigezi Wildlife Reserve; this is the most diverse ecosystem in Africa. With 606 bird species a visitor has chances of seeing the rare Shoebill stork. Make sure you don’t miss a launch cruise on the Kazinga Channel for the Aquatic life. Queen the best 4 tracking lions ES 10 Two Days Chimpanzee tracking and Nature Walks in Kibale National Park. The Park boasts of other 12 species of Primates including Black and White Colobus Monkeys, I’Hoest’s Monkey, Blue Monkeys, Red Colobus among others. Enjoy a nature walk in a community owned Bigodi Swamp to check for other mammals like the Sitatunga, Bushbucks, Otters, water bucks and Mongoose ES 11 Two Days A visit to Semuliki National Park is also rewarding. A total of 53 mammal and 441 bird species have been recorded. Semuliki is one of the most biodiverse and oldest forests of Africa located in Albertine Region of the Great African Rift Valley. Don’t miss the Sempaya Hot Springs and the exciting local people the Legendary Pygmies (Batwa Tribe). ES 12 Three Days Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest Protected Area with the most wonderful Water Falls in the world found along River Nile. Game driving or Nature Walks in the Park allows you to see; Giraffes, countless herds of Buffaloes and Elephants, Hippos, Crocodiles as they cause manageable “ANIMAL TRAFFIC” in and around the waters of the Nile. Launch Cruising and Sport Fishing are the highlights of the visit to the Park. A brief stop at Nakayima Shrine, a splendid tree beholding the spirit of an ancient king. ES 13 Two Days Guided Nature Walks and Chimpanzee Tracking in Budongo Forest Reserve are so exciting. This lush Lowland Rainforest has the biggest number of Hard Wood Mahogany (Entadophragma and Khaya) Species in East Africa. It is also home for one of the biggest Chimpanzee groups in the world. The forest also shares boundaries with the famous Murchison Falls National Park a savanna biodiverse and therefore there are high chances of seeing both forest and open savanna wildlife. ES 14 Seven Days Game viewing or mountaineering in Rwenzori Mountains National Park (the Snow Capped Block “Mountains of the Moon”). The Rwenzori remarkably boasts of its flora and fauna. View and take a bath at the pronounced hot springs in Kasese. Many primates can be seen along the central circuit trail. The Rwenzori is home for 241 bird species of which 19 are Montane Endemics and others are Albertine Rift Endemics; notably the Rwenzori Turaco, Malachite Sunbird and others. Mountain climbers will enjoy a Great Visit to Rwenzori. Local Porters are ready to make your hike easier by carrying your luggage for a charge RIVER FLOWING FROMMT RWENZORI HOT SPRING ES 15 Seven Days Mount Elgon National Park is located on an extinct volcano shared by Uganda and Kenya with fewer fauna than flora. An interested mountain climber needs a minimum of four days to trek the short trail. On the trip one can see; Blue Monkeys, Bush and Waterbucks, and occasionally Buffaloes and Elephants. The mountain is hugely important for water catchment as its vegetation on the rocks act as a giant biological sponge. ES 16 4 days The Kidepo Valley National Park is the remotest park of Uganda. The Uganda’s most scenic Park has the most exciting wild life. About 77 mammal species and 489 bird species can be seen in the open tree savanna. Mammals like the Bat-eared foxes, Striped Hyenas, Cheetahs, Mountain Reedbucks, Guenther’s Dikdiks, Elands… among the birds are the Giant Ostriches, Secretary Birds, Koori Bustard, Carmine, Little Green and Red-throated Bee eaters. The local people (“the Karimajong”) though the remotest in Uganda but are the most spectacular, arrangements can be made to visit the “Karimajong Manyattas” (Homesteads) to see traditional customs, stools, Spears, Head Dresses, Knives, Bows and Arrows and Jewelry. ES 17 One Day Chimpanzee Habituation at Ngamba Island. The Island is located amidst Lake Victoria. A trip to this Island will give you a chance to stay with these legendary primates all the time. Have a chance to participate in feeding them. ES 18 Two Days A tour to the Northern Uganda. This war-ravaged region which is recovering from the bruises is worth a look at. A visitor must not miss the Sir. Samuel Baker’s Fort at Patiko where slaves were scrutinized before ‘exporting’ them. ES 19 One Day Kampala City tour which will give you a chance to visit a number of historical sites, the Martyrs’ shrine and other shrines, temples, markets, craft shops and the Uganda museum. BIRD WATCHING ITINERARY Safari code Duration Activities During the Safari ES 01 One Day Birding Entebbe Botanical Gardens and Entebbe sewage treatment pond. shoebill ES 02 One Day Birding Mabamba swamp and Bussi Island for not only the rare Shoebill stork; but also Pygmy Goose, the Lesser Jacana, White-winged Warbler, Papyrus Gonolek and Grey-rumped Swallow. ES 03 One Day Forest Birding in Mpanga Forest. This medium-altitude evergreen and swamp forest is only 40km from Kampala and has a plentiful of forest birds. ES 04 One Day Site seeing and birding the Source of River Nile. Here the list of water birds is endless. ES 05 Three days Birding at serenada Eco resort, lake Vitoria island to meet the bird paradise of both water and terrestrial birds. ES 06 Four Days Birding Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for the Albertine Rift endemics. Bird around Buhoma and onto the Waterfall trail. Bird “the Neck” for a few hours en route to Ruhija. Walk the short and long trail to Mubwindi swamp, then around Ruhija. One can also track Gorillas and Chimpanzees. This is optional. Some of our friends lets support them. Uganda’s star attraction is the endangered mountain gorilla, the bulkiest of living primates, and among the most peaceable. Staring into the pensive brown eyes of these gentle giants, who share 95% of their genes with humans, is as humbling as it is thrilling; no less so when one realizes that fewer than 700 individuals survive, divided between Bwindi National Park and the Virunga Mountains. Within Uganda, five habituated gorilla troops – four in Bwindi and one in Mgahinga National Park - can be visited by a total of 30 tourists. ES 07 Two Days Birding “the Royal Mile” and Busingiro Area in Budongo Forest for more than 350 species including the Cassin’s Hawk Eagle, Nahan’s Francolin, Black-coloured Lovebird, Cassin’s and Sabine’s Spine tails. ES 08 One Day Birding Kaniyo Papidi near Entebbe International Airport sector of Budongo Forest birds. ES 09 Two days Bird watching in Mabira forest almost central Uganda on Jinja road is a fascinating one which harbors about 316 bird species and find Nahan’s francolin only endemic to the area with a rare smallest tit hylia small bird species to see... ES 10 Three Days Bird watching in Murchison Falls National Park in the south of River Nile – around the Sambiya river and Para. Arrange the boat trip to the falls to see the endemics like Shoebill, Secretary bird, Bat Hawk, Four- banded Sand grouse… ES 11 Three Days In Kibale Forest National Park. Birding at the entrance road to the forest, birding at Kanyanchu area, Magombe swamp and Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. Chimpanzee tracking is also possible here if one is interested. ES 12 Four Days Birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park around Mweya and the Ishasha sector (one can organize a game drive for tree climbing lions). Arrange for a boat ride at Kazinga Channel for countless water birds and in and around the crater area. Bird around Lake Kikorongo and Kasenyi track. There are high chances of seeing the Albertine Rift Endemics at Kyambura Gorge. ES 13 Two Days Birding in Lake Mburo National Park along the entrance road to Rwonyo, along Lakeside Track and Kyambura Loop. Take a launch cruise for the African Fin foot and Shoebill ES 14 One Day Birding Lake Albert and the escarpment of the Albertine Rift Valley for the Albertine Rift Endemics. ES 12 Three Days Birding Semuliki National Park, preferably camping along the Kirumia River trail. It is also possible to watch rare birds in the Sempaya area. Bird Lake Albert, the gallery forest along the Mugiri river, the woodland towards Ntoroko and the Semuliki Flats. ES 15 Three Days Birding Rwenzori Mountains National Park - the fabled “Mountains of the Moon” for a total of 195 species, with 18 Albertine Rift Endemics like the Rwenzori Turaco, Rwenzori Batis, Montane nightjar, Dwarf Honeyguide and many more. Mountaineering is very common here and one can organize for a shorter foothill hike for 3 days but 6-7 days are required for a usual mountain loop. ES 16 One Day Birding Maramagambo Forest. This is another place where one can see a number of forest birds. ES 15 Three Days Birding Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for over 115 species in this Montane forest with an extensive belt of bamboo and regenerating pastures. Gorillas and Chimpanzees can also be tracked here. ES 16 Two Days Bird the different trailheads and routes of Mount Elgon National Park: the mixed Montane forest. There is a chance to watch 296 birds including 40 restricted range species. The endangered Lammergeyer can be seen here. Anyone interested in mountaineering can do it here with an addition of time. ES 17 Three-Five Days Birding Kidepo Valley National Park located in the Kotido-Karamoja Province for a minimum of four days to make it worthwhile, concentrating on the dry Kidepo Valley and the granite outcrops like near Katenga in search for around 475 species, some of which are endemic like the Karamoja Apalis. Birding in Moroto and the surrounding areas to see most of the northeastern “specials” totaling to 225 species, especially the Fox’s Weaver. This birding trip will give you a chance to watch birds around Soroti, Mountains Kadam and Morungole. Please Note: • The itinerary can be tailor-made to suit the time, interest and travel budget of the client. More or less days can be applied to include or exclude some destinations or tour activities. Just mention it and we prepare it for you. • The days allocated indicate the time spent at the designated tour places only, therefore, do not include travel or transfer time. • To protect the animals, birds and visitors, you must follow the instructions and rules as given by your tour guide. • The client is advised to carry his/her own equipment to use such as binoculars, jungle boots, cameras, insect repellants, telescopes, and rain coats • Prices are quoted in foreign currencies like US Dollars, Pounds and Euros. At the time of booking, the client(s) will need to pay for all gorilla permits needed in full and a deposit of not less than 50% of the total safari cost. • The prices for car hire include; Tour guide/ driver’s allowance, and wear and tear or repair charges only. • Fuel charges depend on the various distances to be traveled. Therefore where it is an all-inclusive tour package, fuel is included but in cases where the client wants to hire a car only, the fuel charges will be met by him/her. • The rates will have a 10% increase for handling • The client is advised to carry Dollar bills of the year 2000 and above, as those of 1999 and below are under-rated in the foreign exchange market. For those intending to get into Uganda through other entry points like Busia and Malaba from Kenya, Katuna from Rwanda or Mutukula from Tanzania, we can as well organize an itinerary for you. Key to Itineraries: O/N Overnight FB Full Board basis: Accommodation and All Meals (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are included in the safari cost.
