RAW MATERIAL OF THE WEEK Oud, sometimes known as oudh, oodh, agarwood, agar or aloeswood, comes from the Aquilaria tree. Aquilaria trees that become infected with a parasite mold, secrete a fragrant and protective oil into wounded areas (roots, branches or sections of the trunk). The affected areas of the wood become harder and darker brown to black which are then harvested and put into distillation process to produce oud oil which is used in perfumes popular in Arabic countries. However for centuries oud has been used to make high-quality incense and aphrodisiacs by the Chinese, Arab, Indian and Japanese for religious and festive celebrations. It has been described by the Chinese as a sweet, deep but balanced fragrance. Oud wood and oud resin have continued to be prized raw materials in the market worth more than gold. Now, the best quality oud is considered to come from India, other qualities come from Cambodia and Malaysia. But other plantations exist in a number of countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Laos, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Vietnam. Oud Extract: Animalic, Castoreum, Fatty, Smoky, Woody, Oily. Dry Oud Incense: Smoky, Dry, Animalic.
