RE-ELECT Ross Watson For Cochrane Town Council October 21, 2013 THE CANDIDATE: Ross is married to Dolina. They have lived in Cochrane since 1986 and have raised their son and daughter in Cochrane. In 2009 the family expanded to include a daughter-in-law and a son-in-law. Today, they are the proud grandparents’ of two beautiful granddaughters. Ross has been employed by Alberta Parks for nearly three decades and currently sits on the Kananaskis Operations Team. As manager of a facility for seniors and the disabled he is in tune to the diversity of needs in a community. From 1994 to 2001 Ross was a member of a panel that reviewed Alberta’s Human Rights Commission and related legislation and supported 54 changes to Alberta’s Human Rights Act. Ross has been the recipient of many awards including the Canadian ‘Golden Jubilee Medal’ and the ‘Alberta Centennial Medal’. Ross represented Canada in the 1988 Para Olympics. In 2002, Ross was appointed Operation Eyesight Universal’s (O.E.U) Canadian Ambassador of Vision. He has earned a Degree in Recreation Administration from the University of Alberta. In 2009 Ross received an honorary Doctorate of Laws, for his body of work both in his local community and Alberta, from the University of Lethbridge. He gave the convocation address. An outdoor enthusiast since he was a student at the University of Alberta, Ross was the first blind climber to attempt North America’s highest mountain, 20,320 foot Mount McKinley, in Alaska, in 1990. After 26 days on the mountain two members of Ross’s team reached the summit. In 2000, Ross fulfilled a lifelong dream by organizing and executing an expedition to be the first blind climber to summit Canada’s highest mountain, 19,640 foot Mount Logan, in Canada’s Yukon. On May 25, 2000 after 19 days of 60-kilometer winds and -35ºC temperatures, Ross and his three teammates reached the West Summit of Mount Logan. Ross has continued his climbing adventures and prepares for and plans a trek each year in the Rockies. In July 2005, Ross traversed the central mountain range on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic.
