RE:Verse Family Devotion (9/22/13) READ WITH YOUR FAMILY Hebrews 5:11-6:12 RE:Verse Review What kind of food does a baby eat? A baby can only drink milk. But once a baby gets a few teeth he or she can eat fruit and vegetables. Once the child has enough teeth to chew, he can eat meat which helps his body grow strong. What happens if a child keeps on drinking milk even when he has teeth? His body will be weak because he needs more than milk to grow strong. The same is true for our spirits if our hearts are to grow strong with God. God’s children need to keep growing closer to God. What does God feed His children so their hearts grow strong with Him? God feeds our spirits with the truth in the Bible. In the Bible we learn the basics about God and how much He loves us. We learn that our sin keeps us from loving Him and knowing Him. We learn about God’s plan to send Jesus so we are forgiven. When we trust in Jesus we are forgiven and become God’s child. But God wants His children to grow beyond the basics. If we only learn the simple truths over and over again our hearts will not grow in our love for Him. How do God’s children grow spiritually? They keep reading the Bible. When they read the Bible they ask themselves, “What do I learn about God?” and “What does God want me to do?” They pay attention to what God says is right and wrong. God’s children learn to love doing what He says, because it brings joy to their hearts. If God’s child does not read the Bible and learn what God says is right and wrong, God’s child does not grow. It is like the child who does not get strong because he is still drinking milk. If someone is God’s child he or she will not want to be lazy. They want to study and chew the meaty parts of God’s Word and do whatever God says. Discuss What basics does God give to feed our spirits for growth? How do God’s children grow closer to God? What will you do to grow closer to God? Truth God wants us to grow closer to Him. Pray
