RECREATING WINE FROM THE HOLY TEMPLE Professor Ehud Weiss of the - TopicsExpress

RECREATING WINE FROM THE HOLY TEMPLE Professor Ehud Weiss of the University of Ariel is leading a groundbreaking research effort to discover and recreate wine as it was produced in the time of the Holy Temple. Wine produced for the service in the Holy Temple libations must be made according to exacting requirements, beginning with the method with which the grapes are grown, cared for and harvested. Professor Weiss has planted a vineyard from wild grape seeds he has gathered over many expeditions to uninhabited and uncultivated valleys and ravines throughout Israel. As opposed to the modern wine industry in Israel which is based on varieties of grapes imported from Europe, these wild grape seeds are remnants of grapes grown throughout ancient times in Israel. The grape and wine culture in Israel died after the Muslim conquest 1,300 years ago. Muslims do not drink wine and through much of the era of Muslim rule in the land of Israel it was forbidden to produce wine. Israels modern wine culture began in the mid-nineteenth century as large numbers of Jews began returning to the land. By examining and matching the seeds he has gathered from various locations in Israel with seeds discovered in different archaeological sites dating from different historical periods, professor Weiss is hoping to be able to determine the age of the various seeds that he has gathered. In the meanwhile, the professor is already growing his found grapes in a vineyard he has established at the University of Ariel. With G-ds help the public may soon be drinking wiene made form the same grapes that were used in making wine during the time of the Holy Temple.
