REFUGEE ACTION COALITION MEDIA RELEASE PROTESTS; SELF-HARM CONTINUE ON NAURU Protests and self harm have continued in Nauru over night and into the second day, since the government’s announcement that it intends to re-introduce temporary protection visas. Up to 500 people in the family camp (OPC 3) were involved in serial protests last night (Friday, 26 September), as groups of asylum seekers marched to the front gate of the camp chanting for “Justice” and “Freedom”. At least two people, one 14 year-old girl and a 24 year-old man, stitched their lips together. Another Iranian has cut his throat and is believed to be in a serious condition. Around 100 police remain inside the family compound to try and quell the protests. However, the protests are set to continue tonight (Saturday night): “We will not stop,” the Refugee Action Coalition was told by refugees on Nauru. Further protests also erupted in the refugee camp, near the Nauru township, late Friday night, when news of the Cambodia deal between Cambodia reached Nauru. Protesters at the refugee camp have now asked permission from the Nauru police to march on the Australian embassy on Nauru. Another protest, inside the refugee camp, started late this afternoon (Saturday).
