REMEMBER THAILANDS REFUGEE CAMPS? IT IS TIME TO GIVE BACK? THIS IS A TEST FOR CAMBODIA. Dont get it wrong because the title, I am forever grateful for the UNHCR for helping the refugees along Thais border in the 80s and 90s. I wouldnt have today if UNHCR didnt help. I wouldnt have today if United States didnt help. Many Southeast Asian refugees wouldnt have today if United States, France, Canada, Austria, and other countries didnt help. The world help us. Can we say the same with Cambodia refugee deal? Thailand made millions running temporary refugee processing center and they did it military style therefore they setup many refugee camps with barb wire patrolled by soldiers ordered to shot and killed. Many Cambodian, Laos, Vietnamese, Hmong, Burmese etc. were killed if they escaped the camps without permission. Thailand also had many supports from UNHCR, Red Cross, NGO and other humanitarian organizations. Thailand made monies by controlling the camps and control immigration issues. Foods and supplies were ordered from Thais merchants and there was no real market in the camp but they allowed to have small market for the refugee needs. Children born along Thais border were stateless person because Thailand would not issue birth certificate. There are many complicating issues running refugee camps. Is Cambodia equipped to do it? DID CAMBODIA HAS THE SUPPORT LIKE THAILAND in the 80s and 90s? if the answer is no, it is very risky to do the business. Cambodia should study the refugee business from Thailand first before they dived into refugee business. Compassion without wisdoms is insanity.
