REMINDER! A week on Friday, special session ... Special guest seminar! Every term we will have a guest instructor or two to broaden everyones knowledge and approach to martial arts. Attendance at one seminar is also necessary in order to grade (next grading will be Friday 21 Nov). Our next scheduled seminar is Friday 14 Nov, 6-8pm, cost 10 pounds, in the normal location. Our guest instructor is Kieran OBrien. Kieran runs a Mixed Martial Arts Club at Lancaster University, where IMAs first back belt (Neil Mclatchie) now teaches and trains. Kieran draws on an extensive traditional martial arts background in order to test and refine what works in a competitive mixed martial arts (MMA) environment. More information below! ***************************************** Kieran OBrien – Lancaster University Mixed Martial Arts Kieran O’Brien is an amateur Mixed Martial Arts fighter with extensive training in traditional martial arts. He received his black belt in ninjutsu in 2003, reached the Tae Kwon Do student national semi finals in 2010, and became an instructor in wing chun kung fu under Grand Master Samuel Kwok in 2013. In recent years, he has applied his knowledge of traditional martial arts to MMA. He focuses on adopting what works and discarding what doesn’t. As a result, he teaches an unorthodox stand-up style, heavily focused on elusive striking, and using footwork to create opportunities and generate power. On the ground, he has developed a style that merges the heavy wrestling techniques from catch-as-catch-can wrestling with the movement and techniques commonly emphasised in BJJ. Kieran’s IMA seminar will be divided in to stand up and ground work. Kieran intends to highlight what he calls the ‘basic unorthodox’, and will demonstrate small tweaks that students can make to their techniques, strategy and approach to fighting in order to create opportunities during the fight.
