RHINEGEISTS S23 BEER RAISES MONEY FOR FAMILY OF SGT. ERIC SIERRA OF CINCINNATI POLICE DEPARTMENT CINCINNATI, OH - A local brewery helped come up with a specialty beer to honor the memory of a fallen officer and raise money for his family. Rhinegeist s S23, a Session IPA, is named in honor of Cincinnati police Sgt. Eric Sierra, 39, who collapsed at his home in Cleves while playing with his children on he night of Nov. 8 and later died. Doctors say he suffered a brain aneurysm. “They were going to play some football and clean up his Jeep … he loved his Jeep,” Lisa Sierra, told WCPO, after her husbands death. “He loved his job. He was most proud to be a police officer, and he loved his kids and he loved his friends.” Sierra was a graduate of the Cincinnati Police Academy’s 89th recruit class in 2000 and worked in District 3 for most of his 14-year career with CPD. But his real job was serving as a husband and a father to three children. Upon learning the news, Jeremy Bowman, of the bar Jefferson Social in The Banks, came up with the idea to create a novelty beer as a fundraiser for Sierras young family. Its also a way to celebrate the life of one of Cincinnatis finest. Bowman reached out to Rhinegeist, a local microbrewery, which stepped up and offered to collaborate on the project with Six String Brew Works , co-founded by Sierras brother Joe. On Jan. 9, as part of a collaborative effort, Rhinegeist head brewer, Jim Matt, worked with Six String Brew Works head brewer, Bradley Plank, to create about 80 kegs of what theyre calling S23. The name of the beer, S23, is a tribute to Erics badge number. S23 is not only unique to Eric but also his legacy at the Cincinnati Police Department, Joe Sierra said Sunday during the official tapping ceremony and fundraiser at Jefferson Social. Eric was the life of the party so a beer is the perfect way to celebrate his life. All proceeds from sales of S23 on Sunday will go to the Eric Sierras Children fund. They also sold nearly 200 commemorative pint glasses at Jefferson Social to benefit the family. Beyond Sunday, the beer will be on tap for a limited time at various bars across the Tri-State. A portion of those sales will be donated to the Sierras as well. A stipulation of carrying the beer is a donation to the childrens fund, so literally as you drink S23 around the Tri-State the next couple of weeks those donations are going to the family, Joe Sierra said during the tapping. A full list of participating bars is available on the Six String website . Bowman had previously been working with Joe Sierra in the summer of 2014 on a conceptual microbrewery campaign with bars in Cincinnati to build flavor profiles according to their customer base. They wanted a beer that had all the flavor of an IPA, but not as much kick. S23 is actually Six String’s recipe but in order to accommodate the size of the project, Rhinegeist offered to brew it using their equipment. This Session IPA features the same hops as Rhinegeists Truth, but theyre used in different proportions. The result, the brewers say, is a sessionable IPA that has mango and resiny notes.
