~~~ RIP Pauline Emily (Emilija) Krumins~~~ Nov. 27, 1912 - Dec. 6, 2014 This afternoon my dear little 102 year-old Latvian friend passed away. What a full life she had led. Born and raised and married in Latvia - fled Latvia during the 2nd World War and lived in a refugee camp in Austria for a while - there she met Arnold, the man who eventually became her second husband. She followed Arnold to Canada and Canada became her new home. Arnold predeceased her in 2003. Emily & her husband were friends of my mother and step-father. After I moved back to Canada from the USA in 1991, they asked me if I would be willing to take care of their financial and end of life affairs once the time came. So I accepted and around 1994 little by little began taking care of various aspects of both their personal and business stuff (At that time they were in their early 80s). Emilys husband, Arnold, died in 2003. Then, next year their good friend who lived upstairs in their home also died. So Emily was left alone in her house. She lived in Etobicoke (almost an hours drive from where I lived). So along with working full-time I had to assist her in various ways. In time her health deteriorated too and in March of 2010 she was accepted in the Long Term Care Facility in the same hospital where I worked! It was only about a 5 minute drive for me !! For her age she was doing quite well until the last week and then her health deteriorated dramatically. Thursday evening she responded a little when I talked to her. Last evening she didnt respond at all and we knew her passing was imminent. I arrived at the Long Term Care Centre this afternoon - her room was filled with nurses and care givers -- she had passed away peacefully a few minutes before my arrival !! I had talked to her many times about the Lord and needing to have Jesus in her heart. I had asked if she believed and she said she did! I am in the process of organizing her funeral -- her friends have all died and she has some family in Latvia -- so we will probably have a small graveside funeral in a week or so !! God bless you !! ~~ Eva ~~
