RIP Santa Barbra Built It’s Own “Reservation STEVENS, Ronald C – and Royce December 22, 1929 - April 18,1999 - RIP Judge Ronald C Stevens died peacefully on April 18, 1999, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Orange, New Jersey, in 1929 and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He first came to California in 1951, when he served as an officer in the Army Signal Corps in Camp San Luis Obispo. In 1956 he graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Upon his return to California in 1956, he worked as a deputy probation officer in Los Angeles County while attending law school at the University of Southern California. After graduating in 1961, he worked briefly as a deputy district attorney in Santa Maria before settling into a private practice in Santa Barbara in 1962. Judge Stevens ran unsuccessfully for Municipal Court Judge in 1976 and was president of the Santa Barbara County Bar Association in 1977. In 1981, he was appointed to the Superior Court bench by Governor Edmund G "Jerry" Brown Jr He was Presiding Judge in 1985 and in 1991 and served as a respected jurist until his retirement in December 1997. Judge Stevens served as president and director of the Catholic Social Services and as president of the Serra Club. He was also a fourth degree Knight of Columbus. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed traveling and bird watching. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; son and daughter-in-law John and Stephanie Stevens of Jackson, Mississippi; daughter and son-in-law Peggy and Scott Dionne of Los Alamitos, California; sons Jim Stevens, of Denver, and Matt Stevens; of San Francisco; and three grandchildren: Cecily, Marshall, and Benjamin Stevens of Jackson. He is also survived by a sister, Maggie Stevens of St Petersburg, Florida, and two brothers, Joe Stevens of Ft Myers, Florida, and Rich Stevens of Benecia, California. Services will be held at the Santa Barbara Mission: Vigil at 7p m , Thursday, April 22, and Funeral Mass at Friday, April 23. Graveside services to follow at Calvary Cemetery and the reception will be held at the University Club. Please make contributions in his name to the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara, 300 W Pueblo, Santa Barbara 93102; and Catholic Charities, 609 E Haley Street, Santa Barbara 93103. John I worked with his son John, an English major - Syracuse grad. Earl Petersen gave him a job at the front desk of the Petersen Inn, as a favor to his business partner Judge Ronald Stevens and Royce Lewellyn.
