RIVAL TO GOOGLE GLASS EXPECTED IN SEPTEMBER Google probably expected rivals to its Google Glass (pictured above) to arrive sooner rather than later, but Im not sure it would have expected Samsung to be in the mix as soon as this year. Yes, not content with having a watch to play with your phone, Samsung is now looking at Galaxy Glasses to do something similar, accordion to a report in the Korea Times. An official at Samsung is quoted as saying: The reason is simple. The market potential for smart glass is huge. It will be used in trucks, cars and has a greater impact on related industries such as glass- and coatings-makers. But right now, it is focusing on smart glasses with more modest aims. The Galaxy Glass (that is the official name right now, we believe) will be launched at the IFA trade show in Berlin in September and is said to link with a smartphone to display alerts on a translucent lens, so you can take calls and listen to music. The same Samsung official added: The new smart glass to be introduced by Samsung is a new concept of wearable device that can lead to an exciting culture of communication. The smart glass will present our aim to lead the new market with proven capability. Wearable devices can’t generate profits immediately. Steady releases of devices are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new markets. It will be interesting to see if consumers bite. Its fair to say that the original Samsung Galaxy Gear watch wasnt a resounding success, although an enhanced version launching next month might change our perception of that tech. Will Samsung Glass fare any better? Time will tell, but we think it might take a little time before the idea gets anywhere near mass market level.
