ROAD CLOSURE INFORMATION FOR THE KOKO ROAD RACE LANE CLOSURES on Route 1 and in Tumon for Ko’ko’ Race on Tomorrow (Tumon, Guam) – With the 2013 Guam Ko’ko’ Half Marathon and Ekiden Relay set to start at 5 a.m. on Sunday, residents and businesses needing to travel via Route 1/Marine Corps Drive or San Vitores Road in Tumon may encounter delays and detours from 2 a.m. until 10 a.m. Guam Police Department (GPD) will be assisting traffic flow and ensuring runner safety throughout the course. Officers will be posted at all Route 1 intersections from Kmart to the JWS Restaurant and Supply Store in Asan from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Sunday. Soldiers from the U.S. Army will be posted along Route 14 in Tumon from the Guam Visitors Bureau to Sand Castle. “The main purpose and mission of the Guam Police Department is to ensure the safety of the participants, spectators, and all other people involved in the 2013 Ko’ko’ Half Marathon and Ekiden Relay and to keep the disruption of traffic congestion to a minimum,” said Lt. Manny Chong, operations chief of GPD’s Highway Patrol Division and officer in charge for security detail for the Ko’ko’ Race. PALE SAN VITORES ROAD CLOSURES Starting at 2 a.m., San Vitores Road will be closed from Proa to the Hilton intersection. By 3 a.m., the southbound lanes of San Vitores Road will be closed from Sand Castle to the JFK intersection. Hotels along this part of Tumon will still be accessible with assistance from course marshals and hotel staff, and delays should be expected. Vehicles exiting from beachside roads on San Vitores Road will be allowed to do so when it is safe for the runners, and they can only turn left toward Dededo. Access to the Hilton or any businesses north of Sand Castle will not be affected. Access into and out of the PIC and the Marriott will be allowed by course marshals as it is safe. ROUTE 1 CLOSURES Northbound lanes of Marine Corps Drive will not be affected. Southbound travel will be restricted between the intersections of Routes 1 & 8 and Routes 1 & 4, where the bridge is under construction, and also from the intersection of Routes 1 & 6 (Adelup) to JWS Equipment in Asan. Southbound traffic will be directed up Route 8, and drivers may go through Chalan Santo Papa to the Route 1 and Aspinal Avenue intersection to go southbound. Drivers may take a left turn from Route 4 onto Route 1 to drive south from the Chief Quipuha intersection to Adelup, but will then be routed over Nimitz Hill to continue heading south. San Ramon will also be open for drivers wanting to head from Agana to Piti. All roads will reopen by 10 a.m. VEHICLE ACCESS During the race, no vehicles will be allowed to follow a certain runner, as this will create congestion during the race. GPD is also not authorizing parking on the sidewalk for this day since it is a violation and will create a safety hazard. MEDIA BRIEFING REMINDER There will be a Media Briefing for the Ko’ko’ Half Marathon & Ekiden Relay at 2:00pm today, Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013 at the Pacific Islands Clubs Isa Banquet Room.
