ROAD SAFETY as means to build civil society! Hearing a comment by a government official today........ One could show ones ignorance and insensitivity by quoting safety KPI in total fatalities tolerated. The appropriate KPI for fatality should be targeting for zero fatality, instead of mentioning the deaths we could achieved in the year. A candidate for my HSE Management course! The root cause of road fatalities in Malaysia is poorly designed roads and drivers attitude to safety. Focusing purely on speed and tinted windscreen, and HID lights and number plates are symptomatic treatments, time for government to focus on the main things:- 1. Drivers continuous education- certified competent trainers for Learner Drivers. 2. Defensive Driving Courses- made compulsory the first 3 years after obtaining permanent driving license. 3. Advance driving courses, for those with minimum of 5 years driving experience. (Optional) 4.Strict enforcement against reckless drivers, careless drivers especially heavy vehicles, those breaking the read lights (very rampant amongst motorcyclists). Those caught should be imposed mandatory suspension from driving and must undergo rehabilitation clinics and retest to earn back their license. 5. Demerit points to be imposed to prevent and cure recalcitrant offenders who break road traffic regulations and ordinances. 6.Politicians/ leaders should focus on keeping the basics Safety and Harmony and solidarity instead of meaningless slogans. Keeping our highways and roads safe and a place to spawn cooperative spirit and goodwill goes a long way towards making our community safe, our society harmonious, our civil society growing in size and consciousness, curbing religious bigotry and racial extremism along the way!
