Raheem Sterling is hoping Liverpool can banish painful memories - TopicsExpress

Raheem Sterling is hoping Liverpool can banish painful memories of back- to-back league defeats against West Brom when the two sides meet at Anfield on Saturday. The Baggies were 3-0 winners in Brendan Rodgers first Barclays Premier League game as Reds boss at the Hawthorns in August 2012. Six months later, Steve Clarkes side stunned the Kop with a late double to inflict a sobering 2-0 defeat on the home team. Steven Gerrard saw his penalty thwarted by a terrific Ben Foster save at one end, before Gareth McAuley turned home a corner at the other. Romelu Lukakus calm finish then sealed all three points - and Sterling, who featured on the night, is desperate for there to be no repeat tomorrow. He told Liverpoolfc: They won 2-0 [in the last game] and I came on as a sub. It wasnt the best of memories. Im looking forward to getting back on track and getting the win that we deserve. Everyones fully concentrated on the game and working hard. Hopefully we can go out there on Saturday and take all three points. Hopefully the motivation is there in the changing room. It has been so far this season, so hopefully it carries on. Sterling believes the visitors forward line has the potential to cause problems on Saturday - but insists the Reds have enough defensive quality to nullify the threat. Should Rodgers opt for the same system as recent weeks, his side are likely to line up with three centre- backs on the pitch. Sterling believes the manager has a wealth of talent to choose from in that area and hes confident that if the Reds can keep it tight at the back, they can prosper at the other end of the field. Asked to pinpoint the key to West Broms approach, Sterling replied: I think theyve always got someone strong up front. Last year it was Lukaku and this year its Victor Anichebe. Theyve always got an attacking threat, who is strong and can hold up the play. Then theyll have players running off him. But I think this season we can hopefully deal with this threat because we have three world-class centre-backs there. Hopefully at the other end we can score the goals.
