Rainy, somewhat melancholy but peaceful day… I’m watchin’ a movie. It’s called “The Violence Interrupters” and it’s Documentary about 3 of these people trying to stem the violence in the streets/neighborhoods of Chicago, America’s murder capital. pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/interrupters/ There’s about 5 minutes of the movie that hit me hard, where the cameras pan the ‘Altars of the Fallen’ with their flowers, teddy bears, candles, liquor bottles, cards, notes & tagged banners&walls. The writings on these walls is what you would expect… tough/egotistical gang language, notes of ‘love & miss you’ and one in particular that really floored me, pierced my heart… made me appreciate life, & my life. It read, “I am next”. … whew, how does one cope with such hopelessness?
