Raising a Confident Child I think its important for parents to understand how to develop self-esteem. It is not developed by handing out constant compliments and telling your children how wonderful they are. It is through setting high expectations, nudging them to take risks, letting them try and letting hem fail and encouraging them to try again. So many well intentioned parents over praise with the hopes of developing self esteem - and instead end up conditioning their children to depend on praise and acceptance of others. These children may even seem to have strong self esteem - but it is inflated and easily destroyed. Love your kids unconditionally. Let them known that you always expect them to do their best and that you will always accept and celebrate their attempts. Sometimes the most inspiring thing you can say to a child is, I know you can do better.
