Rajasthan judiciary has come to a standstill since 7th July, 2014. For about two weeks now, Rajasthan Bar Association has been preventing advocates or public notaries from entering court premises. At Jaipur and Jodhpur high court benches, litigants are directly appearing to seek dates. At lower courts, even that is prevented from happening. Through this strike, the advocates are trying to pressure the Chief Justice Amitabh Rai to transfer Additional District Judge Mahendra Chaudhuri and District Judge Deepak Maheshwari, and to withdraw a criminal contempt petition issued against a certain lawyer. This strike has received very little media coverage, and lawyers are reluctant to discuss the reasons in detail… mainly because this strike appears to be MOTIVATED BY PRIVATE GREED & DADAGIRI, with no shred of public interest. STORY BEHIND STRIKE: A 74-year-old senior citizen named Ambarish Chand Kudasiya, whose Jaipur flat was rented out to a lawyer, had a decree in his favour, directing the lawyer to vacate, but the lawyer had a stay order against this decree. But because the lawyer defaulted on rent payments, this stay order was lifted and a re-possession warrant was ordered to be issued. The lawyer wrote an application for stopping further proceedings to enable him to move a Special Leave Petition (SLP). This application was taken as contemptuous, and a notice of contempt was issued on the lawyer. And since that day -- 7th July -- the lawyers of Rajasthan have been on the war path, alleging that their freedom of expression is being curtailed.
