Random fact: The name of our capital was Taphus, meaning beer - TopicsExpress

Random fact: The name of our capital was Taphus, meaning beer houses or halls because after the Native Americans and prior to the Danish West India company formally settling the island, Pirates and seafarers occupied St. Thomas. They did what pirates do, rob and drink. That is also how Main Street was developed. This is why there are so many hidden passages and alleys because pirates would run through them after stealing someones goods. Today, our capital is called Charlotte Amalie. The latter was named in honor of King Christian Vs wife who gave licenses to residents to develop the area around the harbor and many taverns quickly sprung up. The correct pronunciation of Charlotte Amalie is Charlotte Amalia. An accidental misspelling on a map changed the name of the town to Charlotte Amalie after the U.S. acquisition of the islands. Have an amazing Thursday!!
