Rant warning: After 25 years I had my first car accident a few weeks ago (an elderly woman hit my car in a church parking lot). I understand that her insurance company has a vested interest in getting the lowest estimate possible for the repair of my car. (This is Louisiana, most people are going to take the money and drive a dented car.) It seems the only way to get a higher amount is to get my car actually fixed by a reputable body shop (who of course gets the money directly, after they submitted an estimate 50% higher than the insurance company adjusters estimate). It makes sense that they would lowball claimants, and Im all for private companies doing their best to keep rates low and fraud to a minimum. However, an estimate should be a maximum, and include a bit of padding to account for uncertainty. Im an educated man, and the whole process just seems sleazy.
